Pre conference Workshop: Graduate Research Supervision

Facilitators: Glenda Anthony and Peter Sullivan

Supervision of higher degree (masterate and doctorate) research has been described as a deeply uncertain practice.  Those new (and not so new) to supervising frequently ask: ‘What are my responsibilities? Who /what is being supervised—the candidate or the research? How do we keep a candidate on track? How do we determine the depth of the research to match masterate and doctoral levels? This workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss some of these questions within the context of mathematics education graduate research programmes. Our discussions will be organised around the following themes:
•    Rights and responsibilities of supervisors and candidates
•    Choosing a research topic
•    Establishing and monitoring guidelines for progress
•    Cross cultural sensitivities in communication processes, argumentation, ethics, and methodology.
We encourage current candidates and new and more experienced supervisors to attend. Typically supervision occurs in relatively private spaces. The sharing of insights and resources is an important function of MERGA’s community of practice.
