About MERJ

MERJ, an official journal of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia, Inc. (MERGA), is an international refereed journal that provides a forum for the publication of research on the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. Submissions of high quality papers should normally be of general interest to an international readership, but papers exploring specifically Australasian issues, are welcome.

ISSN 1033-217

Submitting manuscripts

Full-length articles (not more than 9000 words, excluding references), shorter reports (short communications – up to 3000 words), and book reviews (up to 1500 words) may be submitted. Articles in which findings from empirical studies are reported, as well as non-empirical, theoretical papers are encouraged. No preference is given to any particular research methodology.

It should be noted that only articles that differ from previously published work should be submitted.

  • The submitted article should be in Times New Roman, 12pt, double-spaced throughout. Use the default margin settings, and the ‘normal’ template in Microsoft-WORD (or similar word-processing package) and its three levels of heading.
  • References should conform to the style guidelines specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association [APA], Fifth edition (2001) – including electronic citations (see also http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.html) – with minor modifications for Australasian usage – see Appendix: "Modifications of APA Style for MERGA Usage"
  • Tables and figures should also conform to APA (5th ed.) styles and should be located in the text. If required, high quality graphics should be used and, if possible, inserted in the text.
  • The first page of the article should include the title; authors’ names, affiliations and email addresses; an abstract of up to 200 words; and five key words that relate to the foci of the paper.

Two versions of the manuscript are needed: a full version, and a blinded version. For the blinded version, all direct and indirect references to the authors should be eliminated and replaced by 'Author'. Both versions should be emailed to the MERJ Editor with a covering letter saying that:

  • the paper has not been submitted elsewhere;
  • acknowledging if an earlier version of the paper has been presented as a conference paper; and
  • giving full details of all authors – affiliations, postal addresses, and email addresses – as well as identifying the author with whom the editor should correspond.

Alternatively, two hard copies of the full version and four copies of the blinded version can be mailed to the Editor. Hard copies should be laser printed and a covering letter, as described above, included.

The review process

MERJ uses a double-blind (blind author, blind reviewer) review process. Each manuscript is reviewed by one member of the Editorial Board and two others. Based on the referees' reports, the Editors decides on the publication outcome whether to publish the manuscript. Specific corrections may be requested Authors of accepted papers may be required to make specific revisions. Suggestions may be provided for a rejected paper which if followed, might make it publishable elsewhere. Authors whose papers are rejected may be provided with suggestions that might assist in making their articles publishable elsewhere. Copies of the referees' reports are sent to the corresponding author.

Books for review, or completed book reviews, should be sent to the MERJ Editor who will forward them to the Book Review Editor.

Publication agreement

A publication agreement must by completed and submitted when your manuscript has been accepted for publication.
