Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS)
FASTS represents the interests of scientists and technologists throughout Australia. These include people involved in mathematics education as well as mathematicians and statisticians. FASTS aims to have a significant influence in the formulation of science and technology policy; and by improving the overall climate for research and development, to bring useful economic, environmental and social benefits to Australia.
FASTS has three formal objectives:
- to encourage scientific dialogue between industry, government, and the S&T community;
- to promote public understanding of science; and
- to foster close relations between the societies
A small amount of each annual Australian individual MERGA subscription is forwarded to FASTS to support MERGA's membership of this federation and the attainment of these aims as they relate to mathematics and mathematics education.
FASTS produces frequent submissions, media releases, newsletter items and position papers. When these relate to MERGA members' interests, they (or links to them) are forwarded to members via MERGA's electronic newsletter.
Each year, FASTS organises Science Meets Parliament, and it supports the attendance of at least one MERGA Executive member. MERGA usually pays for another attendance by a young researcher (usually the winner of the previous year's Early Career Award).
Within FASTS, MERGA is in the Mathematics Cluster, along with the
- Australian Mathematical Sciences Council
- Australian Mathematical Society
- Australian Society for Operations Research
- Statistical Society of Australia
