MERGA 4-year reviews of mathematics education research in Australasia

About MERGA 4-year reviews

In 1984, the first MERGA review of mathematics education research in Australasia was produced. In 1988 it became a 4-yearly review — a tradition that has continued to this day. Early volumes were largely annotated bibliographies, while later issues have comprised extended literature reviews.

The research covered is in mathematics education and mathematics teacher education, in Australasia (mainly Australia and New Zealand). It includes research undertaken by people from Australia and New Zealand living in other countries. It is not limited to research undertaken by MERGA members. The works include relevant Masters and Doctoral theses, journal articles and conference papers.

The topics covered in each review (i.e. chapter names and content) are decided, in conjunction with members who have offered to write a topic, the editors, the Vice President (Publications), and MERGA's Publications Committee. In 1988 there were 4 topics covered (making an edition of 120 pages), while recent versions have covered up to 15 topics (about 400 pages). This expansion reflects the growth of Australasian mathematics education research as well as the development of MERGA itself.

Purchasing MERGA 4-year reviews

The review books are included in institutional (Library) subscriptions to MERGA, but not in individual membership subscriptions.   The 2000-2003 and the 2004-2007 reviews are available for purchasing by members and others.

Editors and authors of MERGA 4-year reviews

MERGA members interested in writing a chapter for the next 4-year review, or in forming a team of editors, should contact the Vice President (Publications). A call for editors and chapter authors is usually made during the third year of the 4-year span, via the MERGA newsletter.
